About the Tribal Area
Alaska Native Village in Alaska, centered on Annette Island Reserve, spans about 133 square miles of land plus roughly 94.1 square miles of water. FCC BDC records show 3 fixed providers and 2 mobile providers across roughly 652 service locations, with current availability of 55.8% at 25/3 Mbps, and 2.8% at 100/20.
Tribal Area Description
In Alaska, Annette Island has reservation lands managed by a federally recognized tribe. The land base is relevant for broadband planning due to rural service coverage and middle-mile access constraints.
The Metlakatla Indian Community (MIC) is located on the Annette Islands and is the only Indian Reserve in Alaska. Tribal Council meetings are held on the first Tuesday of every month. Metlakatla Indian Community, Alaska’s only Indian Reserve, thrives on fishing, tourism, and culture while preserving heritage and self-governance. The MIC Tribal Council conducts the legislative function of the city, approves the budget, plans for capital improvements, approves major land transactions, and more. The Reserve is 20 miles South of Ketchikan, AK, and is typically reached by seaplane, boat, or ferry. "Metlakatla" or Maxłaxaała was founded in 1887, under the leadership of Anglican Missionary William Duncan. The economy of MIC is tied to fishing, seafood processing, services, tourism, and forest products. Census, the population is about 1,562, with 625 housing units included. MIC governs and enforces the Reserve’s rules and regulations.
