Tribal Area Description

In Alaska, Holy Cross has tribal lands managed by a federally recognized tribe. Yup'ik and Athabascan community along the Yukon River, with subsistence lifestyle and close-knit cultural values.

Holy Cross is located in Interior Alaska on the west bank of Ghost Creek Slough off the Yukon River. It is 40 miles northwest of Aniak and 420 miles southwest of Fairbanks. The Yukon river is ice-free from June through October. In 1880, the village was reported as “Askhomute” with 30 residents. A Catholic mission and school were established in the 1880 s by Father Aloysius Robaut, who came to Alaska across the Chilkoot Trail. A post office was opened in 1899 under the name “Koserefsky.”. Subsistence and fishing-related activities are important to residents.
