Tribal Area Description
In Washington, Port Gamble has tribal lands managed by a federally recognized tribe. The land base is relevant for broadband planning due to rural service coverage and middle-mile access constraints.
Our vision is to achieve the full potential of the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribal sovereign nation to be self-sufficient, proud, strong, healthy, educated, and respected. We will ensure the health, welfare, and economic success of a vibrant community through education, economic development, preservation and protection of the rich culture, traditions, language, homelands, and natural resources of our tribe. The mission of the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe is to exercise sovereignty and ensure self-determination and self sufficiency through visionary leadership. In the late 1930 s, the Port Gamble S’Klallam reservation, located on the northern tip of the Kitsap peninsula in Washington state, was established. The Port Gamble S’Klallam were originally known as the Nux Sklai Yem—or the Strong People—and are the descendants of the Salish people who have been well established in the Puget Sound basin and surrounding areas since 2400 B.
